Betty A. Schmidt, at 87, died peacefully at St. Luke's Hospital on October 14, 2007. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1700 Westport Road, Kansas City, Mo. Visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Cremation. A private inurnment will be held at a later date. Betty Schmidt was born Sept. 5, 1920, to Arthur E. Johnson and Anna C. Anderson. She was born and raised in the Kansas City area and is a Rosedale High School graduate. Betty married Carl A. Schmidt on May 23, 1941. She was predeceased by her husband Carl and her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Kay Johnson; grandchildren, Kathryn Johnson, and Carl Johnson and his wife Angie; Betty's brother, Art Johnson and his wife Joanne; and nieces. For approximately 40 years Carl, Betty and Art owned and operated Johnson's Hardware at 39th and Bell. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and baking. Betty with her husband Carl took delight in baking Swedish Rye Bread and a Swedish Tea Ring during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays for family and friends. Betty was a stay at home mother, and worked as the hardware store as the bookkeeper. She was active and served as President of the PTA at Thomas Edison Elementary School. Betty was also a lifelong and active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served on many committees, helped organize pot luck dinners, and was a member of the Alter Guild. In lieu of flowers family suggests memorials be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
