Beth W. Newcomer passed away quietly on June 29, 2009 at her home at the age of 93. Visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m., Friday, July 3 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, Ks. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the chapel. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Grace United Methodist Church, Olathe, Kansas or the Good Samaritan Fund at Aberdeen Village, 17500 W. 119th St., Olathe, Kansas. Born in Des Moines, Iowa April 4, 1916 she moved to Kansas City in 1929 and graduated Westport High School in 1933. She attended Central Business College and was subsequently employed at Prudential Insurance Co. She met Harry Newcomer Jr. in 1935 and they married April 14, 1937. They had 59 plus years together until his death March 18, 1996.
Beth was a 40 year member of Ararat Shrine Needle Guild. She was a charter member of Old Mission Methodist Church in Fairway, Kansas where she was active in the early days of the church. In 1979 she moved to Olathe and joined Grace United Methodist Church where she also volunteered. She was a Past First Lady of Ararat Shrine when husband Harry was Potentate in 1966. Beth’s favorite past times were being a home maker, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved playing bridge with friends and was a member since 1940 of the Wednesday Bridge Club. She also played in several bridge clubs at Aberdeen Village and with long time friends. In her words “My family and friends were my world and treasures”. Mom—you were ours.
Beth was predeceased by her parents, Grace Howe Whitney and George Eli Whitney, her brother Jack H. Whitney, husband Harry C. Newcomer, Jr. and great granddaughter Jaycee Brewer. She is survived by her three daughters Julee Shields (Gary), Linda Newcomer, Babs Finkle (Brian); grandchildren Gregg Shields (Tricia), Scott Shields (Terri), Bruce Brewer (Kelly), Brooke Stingle (Tim), Heather Chappell (Scott), Tyler Finkle and 8 great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all of us.
