BARABAR WHITNEY WHITE MCCLAIN
Barbara Whitney White McClain died August 11, 2010 at her home in Leawood, Kan., after a brief illness. She was 61. Born and raised in Mexico, Mo. McClain was the daughter of Robert M. and Barbara Spurgeon White. She was a cheerleader at Mexico High School, and graduated in 1967. She was a team captain and later a counselor at Camp Bryn Afon in Rhinelander, Wis., during her high school and college years. McClain was a graduate of Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo., and was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority. After completing her education, she was employed as an advertising sales representative by the Boulder Daily Camera, in Boulder, and later as a marketing executive at Pepsico in suburban New York. After settling in Kansas City, she taught a variety of subjects at Queen of the Holy Rosary School as well as in the Shawnee Mission, Turner, and Blue Valley school systems. She had a special passion for working with special needs students. She later worked with residents at Overland Park Place and The Forum, Overland Park. Her marriage to Ronald T. McClain of Boulder, Colo., ended in divorce. McClain is survived by her son, William T. McClain, of Los Angeles, Calif. She also leaves her sister, Laura W. Erdel , brother-in-law Stephen E. Erdel, both of Columbia, Mo.; sister Jane See White of Tucson, Ariz.; brother R. Mitchell White of Dallas, TX., and six nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons at 82nd and Metcalf, Overland Park on Thursday, August 19 at 6 pm.
