Ania Labunski Johnson, age 65, Prairie Village, Kansas, died on Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, from complications following knee surgery. A memorial celebration will be held Saturday, January 9, 2016, at Overland Park Christian Church, 7600 W. 75th Street, Overland Park, Kansas, where she was a member. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m.; her memorial will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception at the church. Guests are invited to wear purple in her honor.
She recently retired from the Kansas City, Kansas School District, where she was a lifelong teacher and instructional coach. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Pittsburg State University, and her master’s degree in education from Kansas State University. She was a member and past vice president of Alpha Delta Kappa, and a member of the Delta Rho sorority. She also was a youth member of the Kansas City Civic Ballet and studied with Tatiana Dokoudovska. She was deeply committed to her church and her faith; she sang in choir and volunteered in countless projects, including the food pantry and the Interfaith Hospitality Network, which helps homeless families in Johnson County.
She is survived by her sons, Curt Johnson of Peculiar, Missouri, and Marshall Johnson of Prairie Village, Kansas; her granddaughters, Vanessa Johnson of Overland Park, Kansas, and Beatrice Hillier of Peculiar, Missouri; her daughter-in-law, Erin Hillier, of Peculiar, Missouri; two sisters, Laura Edgington and Carla Labunski, both of Overland Park, Kansas; a brother, Jan Curt Labunski of Diamond Bar, California; a nephew, Rob Edgington, of Kansas City, Missouri; her former husband, Melvin Johnson, of Overland Park, Kansas; and a multitude of devoted and beloved friends.
Cremation is planned; interment will be at the Monsignor Elslander Memorial Rose Garden, St. Martha’s Church, Sarasota, Florida. In accordance with family tradition, please send flowers to someone you love who is still with you, instead of to the church or the family.
