Alfred Service, Jr.

Alfred Roy Service, Jr. passed away Friday, August 27, 2010. He was born February 21, 1917 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Alta Rebecca Ramsburg and Alfred Roy Service.
He graduated from Emporia State University with a Bachelor of Science in Music. He continued his education at the University of Southern California and received a Master of Musicology. He was elected to the USC chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, a national honorary scholastic fraternity. Then he received his Doctor of Philosophy degree with a concentration in musicology from State University of Iowa.
During World War II he served in the Office of Strategic Services, Military Intelligence Division of the War Department.
In 1950, he was united in marriage to Mildred Hill at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, Kansas. They shared 60 years of marriage before his death. After living in Iowa City, Iowa, Alfred returned to Baker University where he was Professor of Music from 1945 to 1983.
In 1983 the Service’s transferred church membership to Asbury United Methodist Church in Prairie Village, Kansas.
Survivors include his wife Mildred, son Kevin and wife Vicki. Six grandchildren, Gregory, Nicole, Matthew, Lauren, Kaitlyn and Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son Elton.
Memorial service will be held at 10:30am, Tuesday, August 31, at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Visitation will be held the same day from 10:00am until service time. Private graveside services will be held in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the music department at Baker University, 606 Eighth Street, Baldwin City, KS 66006
